But stay tuned: City Hall now says the final report will be released this week. The investigation into the investigation was released before the results of the investigation itself. So, what, in the end, did the city find out about the quality of education being offered at yeshivas? We still don’t know. But Naftuli Moster, who led the push for higher academic standards at yeshivas, calls it a “disgrace.” “The City is willing to trade away the education of tens of thousands of students for power and political influence,” he said. The mayor’s team was left leaning on the finding that none of this was criminal. And de Blasio knew about it, the probe concluded, belying his public statements that the yeshiva investigation was proceeding apace. The mayor and state legislators agreed to delay a report of the Department of Education’s findings in an effort to clinch support for extending mayoral control of city schools. In fact, investigators found, there was a more explicit deal. The probe by the Department of Investigation and the Special Commissioner of Investigation for city schools confirmed what many have suspected: the yeshiva probe was delayed as a favor to the politically influential Orthodox Jewish community. The probe dragged on and on with little explanation, and now we know a big reason why: It was “political horse-trading,” a city investigation found. It’s been more than four years since the de Blasio administration launched an investigation into ultra-Orthodox yeshivas and complaints they were failing to give students a decent secular education.
